Have you been interested in martial arts but not sure where to start?
-
Have you been thinking about looking for a new exercise program?
-
Have you trained before and think it’s time to take it up again?
The North Shore Martial Arts Club provides an opportunity for residents of the North Shore to participate in martial arts for fun and fitness all while learning valuable self defense skills.
Our program welcomes beginners and advanced participants alike. We provide training in Judo, Jujitsu, and Karate, with an emphasis on proper technique, practical application, and a good workout — all tailored for each individual.
Many people would like to take up, or continue with martial arts training but find their options limited. Cage fighting is popular now, but often entails a fair amount of physical abuse. This may be fine if you are young and heal quickly, don’t have to go to work the next day, and enjoy bruises , cuts and more. On the other hand, there is the very soft martial arts, such as Tai Chi. This can provide good meditative exercise – though it is not very rigorous or practical in a fighting situation.
Our program is somewhere in between. Just rigorous enough to know that you had a good work out the day afterwards, but you are not limping down the hall to your office or kitchen. Each student receives customized instruction so that the challenge is just at the right level – not too tough, but not too tame either.
“I have been taking Suikido Karate on Mondays, at Lydell, for over a year. The classes are small and well supervised. The instructor is highly experienced. He teaches you at your skill level and at your own pace. I am becoming fit and more proficient in unarmed combat skills. I really enjoy it!” — Barry Schakner (Retired Psychologist, Whitefish Bay Schools)
But besides just getting a work out and getting in shape, you will gradually acquire physical and mental skills that can be used in all aspects of daily life. Your balance, coordination and physical awareness will improve. Your environmental alertness will also get better, as will your confidence.
You will learn how to properly throw a punch, and more importantly, how to avoid one. Kicks, elbows, and other body parts can be practical weapons and you will learn how, and when to use these as well. In close quarters, you will also learn submission holds, various take-downs and throws.
And while we train deliberately, we also have fun. We don’t take ourselves too seriously.
Our instructors have resided and raised their families in the North Shore and have been practicing and instructing martial arts for over 20 years.
We hold our classes weekly at the Lydell School on the corner of Lydell and Henry Clay in Glendale/Whitefish Bay partnering with our local recreation departments.
If you live near Shorewood, Glendale, Whitefish Bay, Fox Point, Bayside, Brown Deer, Mequon, or anywhere in Milwaukee North, we are close.
